About Kulturmiljöbild

Kulturmiljöbild - The Swedish National Heritage Board's photographic database

Our database contains more than 70,000 digitised and searchable photographs illustrating the diverse work undertaken within the historic environment conservation field - a veritable gold mine for those of you who love pictures. The photographs are available free of charge if you download them for private or non-profit use. You can also purchase high-definition photographs, and here the prices vary depending on the purchaser and what the image is to be used for. When using the photographs you are naturally expected to state both the source and The National Heritage Board's name. If you need more information or have any questions please send an email to: kmb@raa.se

On Kulturmiljöbild

Kulturmiljöbild is the name of the Swedish National Heritage Board's database containing around 77,000 digitised and searchable photographs that illustrate the multifaceted historic environment conservation work undertaken. The varied nature of the Board's assignments can result in the content being somewhat unevenly distributed.

The photographs have been taken over a period stretching from the end of the 19th century up to the present day. The subjects include ancient monuments and churches as well as industries, archaeology and aerial photographs. Some of the pictures represent the National Heritage Board's own photographic work, while others come from the Board's photographic archive collections. The database is continually updated and new photos added. Digitisation helps to improve the photographs' accessibility and at the same time preserves the quality of the originals, which in turn allows more people to make use of this photographic treasure trove.

Flickr Commons

The Swedish National Heritage Board has become a member of The Commons on Flickr in order to increase public access to its collections of photographs and to provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge.

The photos that are part of The Commons have no known copyright restrictions (marked "no known copyright restrictions"), indicating that the Swedish National Heritage Board is unaware of any current copyright restrictions on the works displayed, either because the term of copyright may have expired, or because we believe no copyright restrictions apply.

The Swedish National Heritage Board does not warrant that the use of the photos shared on The Commons will not infringe upon the rights of third parties, as yet unknown, who may own the rights to these works. You are required to determine and satisfy copyright and other use restrictions that may apply to these works.

The copyright of the Carl Curman photos has expired and they are free to use. Still, when you use a photo from Flickr Commons we would be grateful if you make a reference to

  • The photographer
  • The Swedish National Heritage Board

We would also like you to spread the sharing of our photos by linking back to the photo on Flickr.

The photos on Flickr Commons are meant to be used for enjoyment and for personal, educational and research purposes. It is the policy of the Swedish National Heritage Board to charge reproduction fees to obtain a high-resolution file for commercial use. This fees helps funding ongoing efforts to preserve and digitise our collections. To purchase high-quality reproductions of the original photo, please contact kmb@raa.se.

Search alternatives in the photographic database

You can search the database in three ways: "Fritextsökning" ["Free text search"], "Objektsökning" ["Object search"] or "Avancerad sökning" ["Advanced search"].

These alternatives are accessed via the tab "Sök" ["Search"]

Fritextsökning [Free text searching]

In a free text search you type one or several words in the box "Sök med fritext" ["Search with free text"].

The search function then displays all the pictures matching these words (rather like a Google-search).

Objektsökning [Object search]

In an object search you search for pictures on the basis of their name.

Avancerad sökning [Advanced search]

An advanced search allows you to search for very specific values, e.g. all photographs of harbour environments taken from 1999-2001 by a particular photographer.

Det finns ca 77 000 sökbara bilder i systemet.
